Prefers large, turbid, and eutrophic or mesotrophic lakes, slow-flowing rivers, and brackish estuaries. It favors areas with hard bottoms (gravel, sand, clay) and submerged vegetation or structures for cover. Less tolerant of clear, cold, oxygen-rich waters than pike or perch.

Native to Eastern and Central Europe, extending from the Elbe River basin eastward to the Aral Sea. Widely introduced throughout Western Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa for aquaculture and sport fishing.
