Kuvaus

Pollachius virens, commonly known as Saithe or Pollock, is a commercially important marine fish belonging to the family Gadidae. It is a fast-swimming, schooling fish found in the North Atlantic Ocean. Saithe are characterized by their streamlined body, dark coloration, and a distinctive pale lateral line. They are opportunistic predators, feeding on a variety of smaller fish and crustaceans. This species is highly valued in fisheries for its firm, white flesh.

Fyysiset ominaisuudet

Ruumiinmuoto
torpedo
Väritys
Dorsally dark greenish-brown to black, fading to a silvery-grey on the flanks and a pale belly. The dark coloration is particularly noticeable on the back and upper sides, giving it the 'coalfish' moniker.
Suomutyyppi

Suun asento

Erottuvat piirteet
Straight, pale lateral line that is distinctly lighter than the surrounding body color and does not curve significantly over the pectoral fin., Three dorsal fins and two anal fins., Small barbel, often absent or rudimentary, on the chin (unlike cod which has a prominent barbel)., Large eyes relative to its head size., Forked caudal fin.
Selkäevä
Three distinct dorsal fins. The first dorsal fin has 13-16 rays, the second 18-24 rays, and the third 17-22 rays.
Pyrstöevä
Deeply forked caudal fin, indicative of a fast-swimming pelagic species.
Rintaevä
Relatively small pectoral fins, positioned low on the body.
Erottuvat evät
Two distinct anal fins. The first anal fin has 23-29 rays, and the second 17-22 rays. Pelvic fins are small and located anterior to the pectoral fins.

Tunnistusvinkit

Lateral Line

The most reliable distinguishing feature is the straight, pale lateral line, which is noticeably lighter than the dark body color and does not curve sharply above the pectoral fin.

Chin Barbel

Saithe typically have a very small or absent chin barbel, in contrast to the prominent barbel found on Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua).

Coloration

Its dark, almost blackish-green back and silvery sides are characteristic, especially when compared to the lighter, mottled coloration of Atlantic Cod.

Body Shape

More streamlined and torpedo-shaped than the more robust and deeper-bodied Atlantic Cod.

Elinympäristö

Vesityyppi
saltwater
Syvyys
Typically found in depths ranging from 0 to 200 meters, but can occur down to 300-400 meters. Juveniles are often found in shallower coastal waters.
Ympäristö
Pelagic and demersal, inhabiting both open ocean and continental shelf areas. Prefers rocky bottoms, offshore banks, and areas with strong currents. Forms large schools, especially when young.
Maantieteellinen levinneisyys
North Atlantic Ocean, including the Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, North Sea, around Iceland, Greenland, and along the eastern coast of North America from Newfoundland to Cape Cod.

Avaintiedot

Fast Swimmerbehavior

Saithe are known for their strong swimming abilities and can reach speeds of up to 15 knots (28 km/h), making them efficient predators and difficult for some fishing gear to catch.

Schooling Behaviorbehavior

Juvenile and adult Saithe form large, dense schools, which is a key survival strategy against predators and aids in foraging efficiency.

Long-Livedinteresting

Saithe can live for up to 25-30 years, reaching sexual maturity around 4-5 years of age.

Migratory Patternsbehavior

They undertake significant seasonal migrations, often moving from offshore spawning grounds to inshore feeding areas, and can travel long distances across the North Atlantic.

Dietary Shiftbehavior

Young Saithe primarily feed on crustaceans (copepods, amphipods, euphausiids), while adults shift to a piscivorous diet, preying on smaller fish like herring, capelin, and sand eels.

Turvallisuustiedot

  • Syötävyys: edible
  • Käsittelyohjeet: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to avoid fin pricks or slips. Not venomous or dangerous.

Samankaltaiset lajit

Atlantic Cod

Gadus morhua

Atlantic Cod has a prominent chin barbel, a curved lateral line (arcing sharply above the pectoral fin), and a generally lighter, mottled brown or greenish coloration. Its body is also typically deeper and less streamlined than Saithe.

Haddock

Melanogrammus aeglefinus

Haddock has a distinct black 'thumbprint' mark (St. Peter's mark) above the pectoral fin, a dark lateral line, and a prominent chin barbel. Its body is also generally lighter in color than Saithe.

Pollock (Walleye Pollock)

Gadus chalcogrammus (formerly Theragra chalcogramma)

Walleye Pollock is found in the North Pacific and has a more greenish-brown coloration, a curved lateral line, and a small chin barbel. While sometimes colloquially called 'Pollock' in North America, it is a distinct species from the North Atlantic Saithe (Pollachius virens).
