Alburnus alburnus, commonly known as the Bleak, is a small, slender, and silvery freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It is a highly active, schooling species often found near the surface of the water. Its distinctive silvery scales are often used in the production of 'essence d'orient', a pearlescent pigment.

Body Shape and Coloration
Look for a slender, highly compressed body with brilliant silvery flanks and a darker back. The scales are large and easily shed.
Mouth Position
The mouth is small and distinctly upturned, indicating its surface-feeding habits.
Lateral Line
Observe the lateral line, which is complete and noticeably curves downwards towards the belly in the anterior section.
Fin Placement
Note that the dorsal fin originates behind the base of the pelvic fins.

- Sügavus
- Typically found in surface to mid-water layers, rarely deeper than 5 meters.
- Keskkond
- Prefers slow-moving or still waters of rivers, lakes, canals, and reservoirs. Thrives in clear, well-oxygenated waters with some vegetation. Tolerant of a wide range of substrates.
- Geograafiline levik
- Widespread across Europe, from the British Isles (excluding Ireland and Scotland) and Scandinavia south to the Iberian Peninsula, and east to the Caspian Sea basin. Absent from Italy and Greece.

- Ühilduvus: Best kept in a species-only tank or with other peaceful, similarly sized coldwater fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
- Erinõuded: Requires a well-oxygenated tank with good filtration and plenty of swimming space. Prefers a planted tank with some open areas. Schooling fish, so keep in groups of 6 or more.

Põhifaktid
Essence d'Orientinteresting
The silvery scales of the Bleak were historically, and to some extent still are, used to produce 'essence d'orient' (pearl essence), a pigment used in artificial pearls, cosmetics, and paints.
Surface Feederbehavior
Bleak are primarily surface feeders, often seen darting to catch insects on the water's surface, which is reflected in their upturned mouth.
Schooling Behaviorbehavior
They are highly social fish, forming large, active schools, especially in open water, which provides protection against predators.
Indicator Speciesinteresting
Due to their sensitivity to water quality, Bleak can serve as an indicator species for environmental health in freshwater ecosystems.
Ohutuseteave
Ohutu- Ohutustase: safe
- Mürgine: Ei
- Söödavus: edible
- Käsitsemisjuhised: No specific handling precautions are required. They are harmless to humans. Their scales are easily detached, so handle gently if intending to release.
Sarnased liigid
Common Roach
Rutilus rutilus
Roach have red eyes and typically redder fins, especially the pelvic and anal fins. Their body is generally deeper and less compressed than the Bleak. The mouth is terminal, not upturned.
Common Dace
Leuciscus leuciscus
Dace have a more rounded body in cross-section and a terminal mouth. Their scales are smaller and more firmly attached. Fins are typically greyish, not translucent silvery.
Chub
Squalius cephalus
Chub are much larger, more robust fish with a broader head and a larger, terminal mouth. Their scales are also larger and more firmly attached, and their fins are darker.
