Primarily found in deeper pools and runs of large, cold, oxygen-rich rivers, but will move into shallower, faster-flowing sections for hunting and spawning.

Large, fast-flowing, cold-water rivers with gravel or stony bottoms, abundant oxygen, and minimal pollution. Requires deep pools, undercut banks, and submerged structures (logs, boulders) for cover. Spawning occurs in gravel beds.

Geografische Verbreitung

Native to the Danube River basin and its tributaries in Central and Eastern Europe, including Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. Introduced populations exist in other European rivers, but often with limited success.
