Typically found in deeper channels of large rivers, but also moves into shallower areas for feeding and spawning. Prefers depths with moderate to strong currents.

Large, clear, well-oxygenated rivers and associated lakes. Prefers sandy or gravelly bottoms where it can forage for benthic invertebrates. Avoids stagnant or heavily vegetated areas.

Geografische Verbreitung

Native to rivers flowing into the Black, Azov, and Caspian Seas, as well as rivers in Siberia (Ob, Yenisei, Lena). Its range includes parts of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and Austria (historically). Introduced populations exist in some other European countries.
